The Nobel Prize in Physics 1981 was divided, one half jointly to Nicolaas Bloembergen and Arthur Leonard Schawlow "for their contribution to the development of laser spectroscopy" and the other half to Kai M. In 1924 he won the Nobel Prize for Physics, and in 1925 he showed that x-rays are refracted as they pass through prisms. His son, Kai M. Siegbahn, was also a Nobel laureate.

Siegbahn married Karin Högbom 1914. They had two children: Bo Siegbahn (1915–2008), a diplomat and politician, and Kai Siegbahn (1918–2007), a physicist, who also received the Nobel Prize in Physics, in 1981, for his contribution to the development of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. His wife died in 1972.

None of the 23 nominations for the Physics Prize in 1924 were deemed worthy of the award, so when Siegbahn was nominated in 1925 he was retrospectively awarded the previous year’s still-open prize.
